These pieces were made for a Fen Edge exhibition entitled "Diversity". When presented with this title, my mind leapt to biodiversity, and because at the time it was summer and there were plenty of butterflies around I hit on this as an appropriate illustration of the theme. My garden is quite rich in butterflies, variety as well as quantity, though 2013 was not a particularly good summer for them. One lasting effect of my increased interest in the subject is that I have now acquired a buddleia, which I hope will go on attracting them for years to come. I really enjoyed making my sketchbook, which involved drawing butterflies and their habitats in various media.
